Anamorphic calculator
Work out what an anamorphic lens gives you on your camera. Enter the squeeze factor and focal length to get the desqueezed aspect ratio, the horizontal angle of view, the spherical lens that would frame the same width, and how much to crop for your delivery aspect ratio.
Most anamorphic work uses a 4:3 or 6:5 sensor mode, so choose the mode you will actually record in.
How to use it
- Camera: the recording area of the selected mode.
- Squeeze factor: 2× for classic anamorphics, 1.3× to 1.8× for others.
- Focal length: the anamorphic lens focal length.
- Delivery aspect ratio: 2.39:1, 2.20:1, 2.00:1, 1.85:1 or 16:9.
Example
A 2× anamorphic on a 4:3 recording area desqueezes to 2.67:1. Delivering 2.39:1 means cropping the sides and keeping about 89.6% of the width.
Good to know
The horizontal angle is calculated for the desqueezed image. The spherical equivalent matches width only; vertical framing and the look of the lens are different.
