Shutter angle calculator
Convert between shutter angle and shutter speed at any frame rate, in both directions. The calculator also lists every flicker-free shutter angle for 50 Hz and 60 Hz AC power at your frame rate.
Tap a flicker-free angle to use it. This is the quick way to shoot under practicals, fluorescents or LEDs abroad without flicker.
How to use it
- Frame rate: including 23.976 and 29.97.
- Shutter angle: any value up to 360°, or enter a shutter speed and get the angle.
- Flicker-free angles: shown for 50 Hz and 60 Hz power.
Example
At 24 fps a 180° shutter is 1/48 s (20.83 ms). On 50 Hz power the flicker-free angles at 24 fps are 86.4°, 172.8°, 259.2° and 345.6°; on 60 Hz they are 72°, 144°, 216°, 288° and 360°.
Good to know
Exposure time = shutter angle ÷ (360 × frame rate). A light on 50 Hz power pulses 100 times a second, so the exposure is flicker-free when it lasts a whole number of pulses.
