Film length calculator
Convert film length to running time for the common motion picture formats. Choose the format, roll length and frame rate; the calculator gives the running time of a roll, the number of frames, the length in meters, how much film runs per minute and how many rolls a given amount of footage needs.
Useful for camera reports, ordering stock and planning reloads.
How to use it
- Film format: 35 mm 4-perf, 3-perf or 2-perf, 16 mm or Super 16, 65 mm 5-perf or 15-perf.
- Roll length: in feet, for example 400 or 1000 ft for 35 mm.
- Frame rate and footage to shoot: for the number of rolls.
Example
A 400 ft roll of 35 mm 4-perf at 24 fps holds 6400 frames: about 4 minutes 27 seconds. It runs 90 feet a minute, so 10 minutes of footage needs 3 rolls.
Good to know
Frames per foot: 35 mm 4-perf 16, 3-perf 21⅓, 2-perf 32; 16 mm 40; 65 mm 5-perf 12.8 and 15-perf 4.27. Roll lengths do not include the extra film used for threading and run-up.
