Storage and data rate calculator
Work out how much recording time fits on a card and how much storage a shoot needs. Choose a ProRes flavor, resolution and frame rate, or enter the data rate of any codec, and the calculator gives the data rate, the size of a minute and an hour of footage, the recording time on your card and the total for the shoot with backups.
ProRes rates follow Apple's published target data rates, scaled to your resolution and frame rate.
How to use it
- Codec, resolution and frame rate: for ProRes the data rate is calculated; for RAW and other codecs enter the rate from the camera specifications.
- Card or drive size: in GB or TB, as printed on the card.
- Footage per day, shooting days and copies: for the total storage of the shoot, including backups.
Example
ProRes 422 HQ at 4096 × 2160 and 24 fps is about 752 Mb/s, or 94 MB/s. A 1 TB card holds about 2 hours 57 minutes. Two hours of footage a day for 20 days, kept in three copies, needs about 40.6 TB.
Good to know
Card and drive makers count 1 GB as 1000 MB, and so does this calculator. ProRes is variable bit rate, so real files are a little larger or smaller depending on the image.
