Field of view calculator
See how wide a lens frames on your camera. The calculator gives the horizontal, vertical and diagonal angle of view and, for a given subject distance, how wide and tall the frame is at that distance.
It is useful for lens choice in scouting, for planning how much set or background a shot will see, and for matching framing between cameras.
How to use it
- Camera: the recording width and height of the selected mode set the angles.
- Focal length: enter the lens focal length in millimeters.
- Subject distance: optional; adds the frame width and height at that distance.
Example
A 35 mm lens on a full frame camera (36 mm wide) has a horizontal angle of view of about 54.4°. At 3 m the frame is about 3.09 m wide.
Good to know
Angles are for a rectilinear (spherical) lens focused at infinity. Focus breathing and close focus make the real framing slightly tighter.
