Format equivalence and crop factor
Translate a lens and stop from your camera to another format. The calculator gives the focal length with the same field of view, the stop with the same depth of field, and the ratio between the two formats.
Use it to match a look between cameras, to plan lenses when a production changes format, or to understand what a reference shot on another format would need on yours.
How to use it
- Camera: your camera and mode.
- Focal length and stop on your camera: the lens and stop you are using or planning.
- Compare with: full frame, ARRI LF Open Gate, Super 35, APS-C, Micro Four Thirds, Super 16 or 65 mm.
Example
On Super 35 (24.92 × 18.67 mm), a 35 mm lens at T2.8 frames like a 49 mm lens on full frame. Matching its depth of field on full frame needs about f/3.9. The format ratio is ×1.39.
Good to know
Formats are matched on the sensor diagonal. When the two formats have different aspect ratios, the edges crop differently.
